Overflow Coffee Bar: Chicago, IL

I tried suspending all expectations of what this trip would have in store for us. I really did. But with the wealth of inspiration and experience garnered from the last trip; It was hard for me not to be at least kind of giddy with the thought of all the wonderful people and stories I would soon be able to experience. I have to say, thus far I have not been disappointed, this blog is a very good example of why that is.

While exploring the city streets of Chicago on our first day we stumbled across a real gem of a coffee shop  called, Overflow Coffee Bar. This business was so alluring to us, naturally with a slogan like "changing the world one cup at a time" we were compelled to go in and see what they were all about.

After being greeted by a friendly work staff, we sat down with one of the barista's, Sarah, who was kind enough to tell us more about the business.
"Overflow Coffee Bar is a hybrid between a for-profit and Non-profit" She started with, only deepening my suspicion that something cool was happening here.

"The owner's vision for this place, was to act as a third space. Meaning a place between work/school, and home where people can come for community involvement."

Sarah continued by sharing wonderful concepts and ideals held dear to the owners that I thought were very cool. Firstly, 100% of the coffee and chocolate served at this place is organic and fair-trade.

Additionally, though the Coffee Bar was lucky enough to occupy the buildings lobby space, the building is also shared by around 12 additional non-profits, including Daystar School (a k-8 school). Not to be confused with their Daystar centre, which is also in the building providing classes in zumba, yoga, music lessons, etc. On top of all of that the building hosts "a handful of grant writers", night classes, and more.

Once a month Overflow Coffee Bar also hosts a documentary by a different non-profit in their 200-250 person auditorium. Their August documentary was hosted a non-profit spreading awareness and helping victims of human trafficking. Septembers will be hosted by Amnesty international.
"The owners are very passionate about social justice." Sarah added.

That is about enough to make me fall in love with this place and the owners.
Too amazingly inspiring and awesome to believe? Believe it!

Day 1, and already we are being reminded that there ARE people out there making changes for the betterment of society. They may not fit the criteria for mainstream media, but in the world of Mako Media, this place is a top story!

We do have the power to strengthen our communities and build supportive environments where we can all learn and grow together. We can live life through our passions, and we can make a difference. We are all in this together, and this is a very powerful reminder of what can be achieved with drive and compassion. Carry on, Overflow Coffee Bar.

Be sure to keep a look out for our full-length documentary, "Project: We Are One" for the interview.

Also be sure to check out their website and learn more about all the awesome stuff they are up to!
